The Hairdressing and Beauty Services industry has expanded over the past five years. The rising demand for beauty treatment services has been propelled by the emergence of new markets, higher discretionary income and an increasing population. Growing image consciousness among men has boosted demand for industry services such as hair removal. The expansion of newer high-priced beauty treatments such as laser hair removal and microdermabrasion has lifted revenue in some segments. Industry revenue is expected to increase at an annualised 2.0% over the five years through 2016-17, to $4.8 billion. However, negative consumer sentiment should contribute to a revenue decline of 0.4% over the current year.

The industry is highly fragmented, with a large number of small, independent operators. There is therefore a low level of market share concentration. Some chains exist within the industry, but typically of no more than two or three shops. Several franchises have also emerged recently, with the trend expected to continue. The four largest industry players hold an estimated combined market share of less than 10%. The main factors that contribute to low market share concentration are low barriers to entry, little regulation and licensing, and the relatively small capital outlay required to commence operations.
