Filling in the gaps: Industry enterprises consolidate to improve economies of scale

Dental services in New Zealand are provided under a mixture of privately-funded and government-funded services. While children and adolescents (aged 0-17 years) can access publicly-funded basic oral health care, most adults must use private oral health care professionals on a user-pays basis. The exceptions to this are some low-income adults, patients with special needs or certain medical conditions, prisoners, and adults who incur dental injuries through accidents. The effects of this funding mix can be seen in the prevalence of different age cohorts visiting a dental professional, with over 80% of children having visited a dental professional in the last 12 months compared with less than 50% of all more.

Industry Report - Industry Analysis Chapter

Growth in the Dental Services industry has been constrained over the past five years, as a sizeable proportion of New Zealand consumers continue to forgo regular preventative dental work on the basis of affordability. According to 2015-16 Ministry of Health data, 47.5% of adults (with natural teeth) had visited a dentist over the past 12 months, down from 52.0% in 2006-07. As ...purchase to read more.
