Against the grain: A decline in grain production volumes has contributed to industry exits

Operators in the Grain Storage industry have faced grain production volatility over the past five years. Due to falling grain production, industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 0.8% over the five years through 2018-19, to total $2.7 billion. However, this result does not reflect the volatility that many industry operators have experienced over the period. Shifting wheat prices, movements in the Australian dollar and fluctuating grain production due to changing rainfall levels have influenced industry demand and therefore earnings. Additionally, a record national grain harvest during 2016-17 significantly increased demand for grain more.

  • Industry Report - Industry Locations Chapter

Industry enterprises tend to be located close to export terminals or near areas where high grain volumes are grown. Most grain crops are grown in areas that receive between 230 and 380 millilitres of annual rainfall and business locations are generally distributed accordingly. As wheat accounts for the majority of grains stored in the industry, storage facilities tend to be located in states with large wheat crops, such as New South Wales and Victoria. These two states are estimated to account for over 70% of industry enterprises, while only accounting for less than 60% of Australia's total population. Barley is primarily grown in Western Australia and oats tend to be more tolerant of wetter conditions in Victoria and southern New South Wales. Sor...purchase to read more.
