Smelting point: Revenue has fallen over the past five years due to lower production volumes

Although Australia is the world's largest producer of bauxite and a substantial producer of alumina, the country ranks sixth in global aluminium output, with China the leading producer. Australia is expected to produce a 1.6 million tonnes of aluminium in 2017-18, down from 1.8 million tonnes in 2012-13. Industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 4.2% over the five years through 2017-18, to total $5.3 billion. This decline primarily reflects lower aluminium prices, smelter closures, and production volumes declining at an annualised 2.5% over the same period. However, industry revenue is expected to increase by 0.5% in 2017-18, due to greater output and higher aluminium prices.Exports are estimated to account for more.

The Aluminium Smelting industry is moderately capital-intensive once a plant is operational. However, capital requirements are high to establish an aluminium smelter due to large-scale investment in capital equipment and smelting machinery, rather than upon direct labour inputs. Aluminium smelters cost billions of dollars to construct and even smelter expansions cost hundreds of millions of dollars. For every dollar spent on wage costs, an expected $0.31 will be invested in industry plant and equipment in 2017-18. Capital intensity has increased over the past five years as firms have reduced employment and cut wages in order to improve economic viability...purchase to read more.
