Chopped: The falling price of pig meat has reduced revenue over the past five years

Production in the Pig Farming industry has increased over the past five years. An increase in pig meat consumption over the period has supported pig farmers. Marketing campaigns by the industry’s main representative body, Australian Pork Limited (APL), have supported increased consumption through promoting the health benefits of fresh pork. However, rising pig production, coupled with an increase in imported processed pig meat products in the domestic market, has caused oversupply issues. As the increased consumption of pig meat has not been enough to offset oversupply issues, domestic pig meat prices have fallen strongly from the heights of 2015-16. As a result, industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 2.5% over the five years through 2018-19, to $999.3 more.
