Sumitomo Australia Pty Ltd is a foreign owned private company that engages in commodities trading as well as the distribution of consumer and industrial goods. The company is headquartered in Sydney and employs approximately 50 people throughout its operations in Australia and New Zealand. Sumitomo Australia is owned by the Japanese trading house, Sumitomo Corporation.

Sumitomo Australia operates through the following business units:
 

  • Steel - providing tubular and specialty steel products, particularly to the energy sector, as well as investing and trading in aluminium.
     
  • Power Infrastructure - importing specialty equipment for use in the transportation and energy industries as well as providing management of infrastructure investments and supplying large plant and equipment products. Also, this unit is involved in power generation investments through its joint ownership with Sumitomo Corporation of the Kwinana Power Station and the Bluewaters power stations in Western Australia.
     
  • Mineral Resources & Energy - operations in this unit involves direct investment in mines and exploration companies that are located in Queensland and New South Wales. Also, this unit trades in mineral resources which includes iron-ore, uranium, coal, copper and gold.
  • Food & Agricultural Products - importation and marketing of liquid and dry fertilizers, production of customised blends and provision of on-farm services such as soil analyses. This unit also trades and invests in agricultural businesses including grain, sugar, meat, oilseed, processed foods and dairy products.
  • Automotive - importing electronic and electrical automotive parts as well as providing design, development and storage solutions. This unit is also involved in the importation of equipment for auto production in stamping tools, welding robots, dies and press. Furthermore, the tyre unit imports the 'Sumitomo' brand of tyres for wholesale distribution in Australia. Additionally, the fleet leasing unit provides leasing services in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
  • Wood Resources - this unit involves trading in all timber products that include woodchips for paper manufacture, logs and biomass for base stock fuel in generating power. Together with Sumitomo Corporation, the company is also involved in forest and land acquisitions in New Zealand.
