The University of Otago is a New Zealand-owned Government body that provides tertiary education in New Zealand. The university employs approximately 3,860 full-time staff and has an annual enrolment of over 20,800 students. The university is administered from its head office in Dunedin, and it has an additional four campuses located in Auckland, Christchurch, Southland and Wellington.

The University of Otago operates through the following four academic divisions:

  • Otago Business School - The business school offers the Bachelor of Commerce degree as well as postgraduate diplomas and degrees including the MBA program.
  • Division of Health Sciences - The health science division consists of the Faculty of Medicine, which administers the School of Medical Sciences and three clinical Schools of Medicine located in Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington, and the Schools of Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Physiotherapy.
  • Division of Humanities - The humanities division covers the major fields of the Arts and Social Sciences, including professional programs in Law, Education, and Social Work.
  • Division of Sciences - The science division includes degrees in Consumer and Applied Sciences, Physical Education, and Surveying. The division also includes genetic research and computer and information technology.

Undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the preceding disciplines are available in the form of bachelor's degrees, postgraduate diplomas and certificates, master's degrees and doctorates.

The University of Otago also conducts research in several areas, focusing mainly on health and physical sciences.
