The Department of Community Safety (DCS) is a state owned agency of Queensland that was formed through the amalgamation of the Department of Emergency Services (DES) and Queensland Corrective Services. The Department provides integrated community services that include ambulance, fire and rescue, emergency management and corrective services to the people of Queensland. DCS is administrated from its central office located in Kedron and employs over 10,000 full time equivalent staff throughout its operations.
The Department of Community Safety consists of four operational arms:
- Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) - Provision of pre-hospital paramedical response, emergency and routine pre-hospital patient care, aeromedical services, coordination of disasters and multicasualty incidents, community first aid training and baby capsule hire service.
- Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) - Prison management of 18 correctional centres and facilities, and operates 46 probation and parole offices throughout Queensland.
- Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) - Provision of firefighting and rescue services, community education, fire and hazard prevention and risk management of landscape fires.
- Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) - Provision of disaster management arrangements, community safety & education programs, emergency helicopter services, SES volunteer emergency response and recovery services and support to community helicopter providers and volunteer marine rescue organisations.
