Forestry Tasmania is involved in the sustainable production and delivery of forest products and services for community benefit. The primary functions of the company are:

  • Sustainable Forest Management: Forestry Tasmania manages 1.5 million hectares of land, half of which half is used for wood production and the remaining for conservation and recreation. Forestry Tasmania harvests and regenerates approximately one percent of State forest each year, without the use of chemicals and the company no longer allows the conversion of native forests to plantation. Forestry Tasmania's sustainable forest management practices and management systems are certified by the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) (AS4708), the International Standards Organisation standard for environmental management systems (ISO14001) and the Australian Standard for the management of Occupational Health and Safety (AS4801).

  • Science: Forestry Tasmania spends over $3 million a year on research and development to understand forest ecology and inform sustainable forest management practices.

  • Regional Development: As required by the Forestry Act 1920, Forestry Tasmania fosters an internationally competitive wood production and processing industry in Tasmania. Forestry Tasmania annually produces approximately 300,000 cubic metres of saw and veneer logs and lower quality logs are sold as pulp wood. In addition, special species timbers (such as Blackwood, Myrtle, Sassafras, Leatherwood and Huon Pine) are gathered to supply the craft industry. Forestry Tasmania is currently working with investors to develop a biofuel plant in the state's south which will generate electricity energy using forest waste.
